7 REASONS WHY BODYWEIGHT TRAINING MATTERS
By: Adam MacDougall | In: Exercise
In my 20 years as a professional sportsman I have tried out plenty of training methods and have seen many exercise trends come and go. Throughout that time the fitness industry has regarded bodyweight training as a Plan B with the gym regarded as the go-to for many of those wanting to get fit, build muscle or tone up.
Despite this bodyweight training is the one form of training that I have continually come back to and achieved the best results from. Simply put, bodyweight exercises can be a great choice for gaining strength, building muscle, boosting fitness and losing weight.
Here are 7 reasons why bodyweight training is your best bet:
1. It requires minimal or no equipment
With bodyweight training your body is your best gym. There’s no fancy equipment required. This gives blokes the freedom to workout wherever and whenever they want - at home, outdoors, in the hotel room or even the office.
2. It helps your body move the way it’s suppose to
As a man it’s critical that you master your own body to improve your overall ‘functional’ fitness (aka life!). Functional or bodyweight training can help you dominate the little things in life like carrying all your groceries in one trip like a boss, playing with your kids without getting exhausted and going up the stairs without feeling like you just ran a marathon.
3. It makes you a better sportsman
For the weekend warriors the ability to move better (run, jump, twist, squat) is critical no matter what sport being played. As well as helping dominate the little things bodyweight training can help enormously in whatever sport you do making you a fitter, stronger and more efficient athlete overall.
4. It protects your joints
Completing bodyweight exercises through a full range of motion is a great way to ensure joints are moving freely. It can may even reduce the chance of exercise related injury.
5. It provides something for everyone
Bodyweight exercises can be modified to suit any fitness level, physical condition or age. Whether you’re a looking to just get moving or improve your fitness and strength. The flexibility of bodyweight training allows for a number of simple ways to make any exercise more challenging.
6. It builds muscle
Few blokes believe it, but you don't need barbells, dumbbells or machines to build muscle; in fact, weight-training equipment often inhibits the process as it requires a gym. Consider the chin up: it's the standard by which all bodyweight exercises are measured. And even the most hard-core will agree that there's no better muscle builder for the upper body - with or without weight.
7. It is fast, fun and convenient
No gyms, no heavy weights and no fancy equipment required. Bodyweight exercises can be done anywhere, anytime from the home or backyard to the local park or the hotel room. Got a door? Use it for chin ups. Got a table? Use it for table rows. The best thing is it only takes 10 minutes a day to achieve results.
At The Man Challenge bodyweight training is our Plan A and for 10 minutes a day you too can make it your go-to workout. No gym required.
